Our users want their avatars / profile pics, but they don't want 20 second page load times. Band-aiding the resulting UX into something tolerable is a large problem for us.
Asynchronous loading is beyond mandatory for anything requiring Facebook avatars. We would use lazy loading, like we do for everything else, except that Facebook is lazy enough for all of us.
