Hipster has a meaning, even if it only describes what it isn't. It's much like Christianity. If you say you are a Christian all you're really saying is that you're not an Atheist. Hipster has the same symbolism, you're essentially saying what you're not. Hipsters of almost all stripes tend to progressive and independent in some way.
