When the history of this administration is written
I often think about how much we can trust history 20-30 years from now. It is hard to trust history from hundreds of years ago, either because it was written by victors or because there just isn't enough material in the first place. I suppose we have the opposite problem now (and in the future) - too much noise and junk, whole bunch of it generated by AI slop - where does one even start?
As a species, we need to evaluate our attitudes to work. The quote above resonates at some level, but maybe there are some people who enjoy doing dishes and laundry, who knows.
Most people are just surviving. It is a constant battle between slaving away in jobs (and have healthcare tied to our jobs) we don't like and rest of our lives, including relationships, hobbies, even health. Most people do not have the time or energy to think about anything else other than just getting through the day.
Not for that task, you don't. Just get a washer/dryer. They're very common where I live: the machine both washes and dries your clothes, and uses a heat pump system on the dryer side for high efficiency.
What's missing is a robot that will take the clothes out of your washer/dryer, fold them up, and put them away for you.
my dishwasher in my apartment simply doesn't work. i've tried everything, cleaning the filter, using special cleaning chemicals, vinegar, whatever. maybe if you can afford a nicer machine but if you're in an apartment and especially in one where they choose what dishwasher to use, then dish washing is not really automated at all. i rarely use mine because of how ineffective it is.
How is it fair to compare a Show HN project with official government datasets? People depend on government datasets, multi-billion dollar businesses are built on top of them. A show HN project is typically someone building it in a weekend. They’re not even remotely in the same league.
Sure it is expensive to check every number, but at least some of it can be automated and flagged for human review, no? Switching lat/long numbers. For example

Well what I'm proposing building would be source-available and licensed such that the gov can run it themselves if it ever gets too expensive. The sub-gov entities should really band together for the negotiation though, then they can ask for whatever they want: non-profit vendors, liberal licensing, price agreements. A collective of government buyers form basically a monopsony larger than any individual vendor could ever be.
So many countries (Russia is reported to be helping Orban, for example) meddle in other countries' affairs, even when it doesn't affect them at all, directly or indirectly. These days a lot of damage can be done online (propaganda, riling people up, fake news etc) for very little money - how does one even begin to counter this? Especially if you are a small country/poor with limited resources
I have been in flights, elevators (not joking), coffee shops where people were listening to music or were on phone calls, on speaker.
There are some weirdos amongst us. There were a handful of reports of people singing religious music, in planes while on flight. I haven’t had the pleasure of listening to this, thankfully
It kept asking “can I do this, can I do that” and I kept saying Yes. It ended up being a VERY lengthy conversation, it started repeating itself towards the end.
Not all of it was bad though. A lot of the questions were actually relevant. Not defending ChatGPT here, I suppose they’re trying to keep me on the page so they can show ads - there was an ad after every answer

I am curious - how do you even begin to police such a thing like polymarket? Wouldn't it take enormous resources to do it? Is it even worth it at that scale? They let you bet on anything and everything, right?

Maybe this is the solution - don't let people bet more than $5. That is small enough for everyone to have some fun and not worth it for insider trading, threatening journalists etc?
You mean, turn it into a fun minor hobby-time of sharing popular-opinions that are mostly weighted by how common they are, rather than dangling a huge perverse-incentive in front of an insider so that they reveal (or cause) a strong outcome through greed?
Actually, there's another perverse incentive operating on a higher level, when it comes for the people running things: "How is my prediction-market startup supposed to IPO for a bajillion dollars if we're not first-in-line for having sometimes-corrupt insider data? Nobody's going to pay me that much for a company that's just a spicier form of polling."
I understand your point, but there are only X number of seats in an airplane, airline seats are physical products. Why should the same be applicable to a digital product? I mean, it is their property so they are free to charge whatever they want (just like the users are free to leave) but it feels way more intrusive to track users' reading habits and tailor pricing to each user than saying "only 2 seats are left but 5 people are interested, so we're jacking up the price"
It absolutely is a different and more insidious type of dynamic pricing.
First, you can use the airline's strategy to your advantage by planning early. It doesn't feel as unfair because everyone gets the same terms and the system is transparent and equal
WaPos daynamic pricing is simply maximizing value capture, without any way of a consumer benefitting. It's 100% lose-lose for the consumer. You always pay the maximum you are willing to pay. No discounts!
I was just answering OPs question about how airlines were transparent about their system and decided to answer it factually.
while it might feel like a discount, buying airline tickets upfront is not a "true" discount in the traditional sense, because the money is prepaid, and is worth it to the airline to receive guaranteed income from a seat early. A true discount is one where the margins of the product is shrunk to reduce the price.
