RIAA doesn't like it, but my introduction to a video game series I've since spent hundreds of dollars on over the years, came from running across one of its soundtrack pieces on Youtube.

There's a reason companies talk about "customer acquistion cost", as you generally need to pay to market your products to potential customers of them.

So free marketing can be a real cost reduction. It may not be enough to be a benefit compared to the cost of piracy, but it's hardly a made-up defense.

It is (was) a commonly used defense. It might not hold much weight legally, so its applicability depends upon whether one is interested in the letter of the law or interested in the wellbeing of the recording artists.

Yeah once you have the lyrics, why would you waste time listening to the song? You might as well get chat gpt to summarise the lyrics into a few bullet points and save you the time of even reading them!

I'm not the Paint.NET developer (just a happy user of that software), but to me the moral logic would go something like this:

If Anthropic can absorb proprietary or GPL code into their models, which they rent usage of for tens of billions of dollars in revenue, and successfully claim that this violates no licenses, then I can also consider the output of those models "clean" for purposes of my software I give away for free.


Turbos you find in cars like the Civic operate between 180000 - 200000 RPM. But working at a rocket engine manufacture is more interesting.

I bet the size difference plays a role, and a car turbo that spins to 200k rpm will definetly be smaller than a turbopump for rocket engine.

Yes it does, it matters a lot. With smaller dimensions, tip speeds remain manageable. As soon as parts of the thing get supersonic, everything gets much more complicated.

I'm going to assume the rocket engine turbo has a hell of a lot more mass which makes it a far more difficult problem.

Makes sense. I had codex port haiku to arm64. Works decently, fun to play with on my Mac.

What I'd love to see (but likely lack the skill to, even with Claude Opus) is PowerPC. Haiku would look great on an iMac G4.

Cool! I watch Action Retro sometimes, but prefer the more relaxed style of TDNC.

I have a Pismo G3, so running Haiku on that would also be of interest to me (and I hadn't seen Tabby-PPC before)... though honestly I'm probably going to keep that machine as the PPC OS X & Classic machine that it is. If I can boot into Haiku from an external drive, then maybe.

Also, don't dismiss what you're capable of with Opus / AI! I keep discovering I'm not being ambitious enough with my AI work. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but the models keep being more capable than I imagine, with enough coaxing. I keep needing to set my sights higher.


I do always find that alternative OSes on PPC Macs are an exercise in going "It worked! Neat." and then going back to the Mac OS. 2026 software on 1999 hardware is always something I appreciate, but it's the Mac's unique "pairing" (lock-in) which gives it value compared to any commodity PC which will run Linux or BSD or Haiku or TempleOS better, and does not run the Mac OS as well.

My LLM experiments have become more ambitious as the tech has improved. Porting a decompiled SNES game to the Dreamcast is the latest (80% complete) victory.

Gaming is such a broad category. That said not even modern triple A games recommend 32 gigabyte yet.


There are games which have long recommended 32GiB, but primarily simulators.

DCS and MSFS 2024 are two such examples.
